I’ve always liked intersting use of type for design, wether it is changes in weight, size or face you can achieve many interesting effects.
So in the spirit of getting things for FREE here are the sites I like to use for free fonts:
1. http://www.urbanfonts.com/ - urban fonts is one of the biggest free font collections I’ve found that doesn’t force you to do things to get the fonts. The site offers a nice text previewer which allows you to enter your own text and test it with various font colors and background color combinations. I haven’t tried counting all the fonts on this site but I’d estimate at least 1000 fonts to choose from. The fonts licenses include freeware (the majority), shareware and linkware with each font zip containing the particular license for that font.
2. My fonts - My fonts includes the popular larabie fonts collection. The site contains 632 fonts with a variety of pricing options. Note most of the free fonts are limited to personal use.
3. Dieter Steffmann is a prolific font designer with a large variety of fonts available. This link brings you to a large list of his fonts where you can download font files for free. The site has only set previews of the fonts.
4. Speckboy has a nice article linking to 25 free fonts, the font selections are really nice mixture of bold and thin professional looking fonts
